    Sarah Elizabeth "Mom" Francis Carnes, 83, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014. She was born November 20, 1930 in Beaufort County, NC daughter to the late Albert and Sarah Twitty Francis. She is also preceded in death by her husband Johnnie Ward Carnes, Sr., one great-granddaughter, Lilyann Deese of Monroe, and a brother and sister.

    Mom is survived by three children, Johnnie Michael Carnes and wife Teresa of Apex, Cynthia "Cindy" Deese and husband Bill of Mineral Springs, Johnnie "Butch" Carnes, Jr. and wife Carol of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Kelly Laton and husband Charles of Monroe, Brandon Carnes and fiancée Stephanie McCoy of Apex, Christopher Deese and wife Heather, Teresa Simpson and husband Zachary, Matthew DeeseHaH, Jacob Carnes all of Monroe, and Chris Carnes of Apex; four great grandchildren, Olivia Laton, Tayla Simpson, Jonathan Laton and Leigha Simpson all of Monroe; two loving friends whom she considered a son and daughter, Johnny Coppedge and Karen Lowery of Lancaster, as well as many extended family and friends.

    Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11:00 am in Gordon Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.

    The family will receive friends on Monday, May 26, 2014 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Service & Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe NC 28112.

    The family has suggested in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Mid-Atlantic Chapter, 9801-I Southern Pine Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28273.
