Pocosin Lakes Fun Day | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Columbia, NC     Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, The Friends of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will be hosting our third nature fun day event on Saturday, May 24, 2014, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters adjacent to the Columbia Rest Area located at 205 South Ludington Dr, Columbia N. C. 27925. The Friends "Pocosin Lakes Fun Day" will be filled with a variety of activities and events for all ages opened free to the public.

    The morning with begin at 10:00 am, with a special treat for the youth, if you love to catch fish or want to give it a try, come out to the Pocosin Lakes Family Day and let's travel back in time and make a cane fishing pole. Step out on the boardwalk and try your luck fishing with your cane pole.

    Tours will include: Pontoon Boat tours of the Scuppernong River (10:30; 11:30 & 12:30) with pre-registration requested (for reservations call 252-796-0723) provided by Partnership for the Sounds, along with ongoing tours of the new Red Wolf Education & Healthcare Facility from 10:00am – 1:00pm – learn about the Red Wolves and see the Red Wolf residents (Hank & Betty) - provided by Red Wolf Coalition.

    Step inside the Pocosin Lakes NWR visitor's center at 12:30pm to enjoy watching the documentary of the Pocosin Lakes NWR and meet the producers of the film, STRS Production of Washington, NC, following the documentary, you will have the opportunity to personally meet producer Mr. Blake Scott & have a Q&A time.

    Other attractions will include special visitor, Smokey the Bear, provided by NC Forest Service, canoe rides, archery, fishing, crafts, and other wildlife activities.

    The Friends group, along with allied organizations, will have activities and crafts celebrating our local wildlife refuge to help the public learn about and connect with the exciting wildlife on the refuge. All of the activities will be family-oriented and free to the public.

    Pocosin Lakes NWR is located in Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties and consists of 110,106 acres of land. The goal of the event is to educate and share with the people of the Albemarle/Pamlico peninsula how blessed this region is to have such an abundance of nature and wildlife that offer peace and beauty to all for a Pocosin Lakes Fun Day.

    The Friends of Pocosin Lakes NWR is a non-profit organization born in 2008 out of the successful fight against the OLF.

    The purpose of the Friends is to protect, help and promote the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge by providing volunteers and funds to support projects, programs and activities of the refuge.
