Jones Announces Third District Winners of Congressional Art Competition | Eastern NC Now

Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) issued the following statement of congratulations to Eastern North Carolina's winners and participants in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition.

    WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) issued the following statement of congratulations to Eastern North Carolina's winners and participants in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition:

    "The nationwide Congressional Art Competition is an excellent opportunity for young people to showcase their talent," said Congressman Jones. "I am always impressed by the artwork that is submitted from Eastern North Carolina, and this year was no exception. Thank you to each of the participants in the 2014 competition, and congratulations to our winners – Brendan Kerlin, Alice Wang, and Mikayla Dixon – on this impressive accomplishment."

    The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. More information is available here.

    A list of this year's 3rd District winners is below:

    First Place: Brendan Kerlin
       Artwork: Decaying Smile
       Arendell Parrott Academy
       Award: $600 cash award, including funding for trip to the Congressional Art Competition Reception in Washington, DC. Brendan's artwork will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol.

    Second Place: Alice Wang
       Artwork: Eighteen
       School: North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
       Award: $300 cash award. Alice's artwork will be displayed in Congressman Jones' Washington, DC office.

    Third Place: Mikayla Dixon
       Artwork: A Fresh Start
       School: D.H. Conley High School
       Award: $250 cash award. Mikayla's artwork will be displayed in Congressman Jones' Greenville, NC office.

    Honorable Mention: Emily Westbrook
       Artwork: Mission
       South Central High School
       Award: $100 cash award

    Honorable Mention: Elizabeth Senecaut
       Artwork: Jaded
       School: South Central High School
       Award: $100 cash award

    Honorable Mention: Morgan Barbre
       Artwork: Katie
