    Press Release:

Beaufort County Community College for the first time this fall will offer an online, eight-week course introductory course in its Early Childhood Education Program.

The course, Introduction to Early Childhood Education, or EDU 119, will be offered via the Internet from Friday, Aug. 15, to Tuesday, Oct. 14. The cost to register is $294. A required textbook, available from the BCCC Bookstore, costs an additional $85.50

The course is required for those who want to work as a lead teacher in a licensed child care center.

Offering this class online in an eight-week format will make it easier for those who live at a distance from the college to enter the child care industry and will enable students seeking degrees or diplomas in the field to reach their goals quicker, according to Lead Early Childhood Instructor Caroline Hardee.

It covers the foundations of the education profession, the diverse educational settings for young children, professionalism and planning developmentally appropriate programs for all children.

Topics include program types, career options, professionalism and creating inclusive environments and curriculum responsive to the needs of all children and families.

After completing the course, students should be able to design career plans and develop schedules, environments and activity plans appropriate for all children.

Students must earn a grade of "C" or higher in this course in order to receive their N.C. Early Childhood Credential issued by the N.C. Division of Child Development and Early Education.

In addition to serving as the starting point for a career in child care, Introduction to Early Childhood Education is the first step for those wishing to pursue any of the certificates, diplomas or associate degrees offered as part of BCCC's Early Childhood Education Program.

Existing or returning students may register for the class at BCCC's Advising Center open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Room 920 of Building 9 through Wednesday, Aug. 13.

New students may apply to enroll in BCCC at the Admissions Office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus or on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu. New students should apply at least three weeks before registration to ensure the admissions process is completed.

New students may register for the class following new student orientation, mandatory for newly-enrolled students. Students may either complete a new student orientation online or attend one of three orientation sessions at BCCC on Tuesday, June 24, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

For more information about BCCC's new online, eight-week Introduction to Early Childhood Education, contact Erica Schatz, dean of Allied Health and Professional Services. For more information about enrolling for classes at BCCC, contact Daniel Wilson, director of Admissions and Recruitment, at 252-940-6233.
