I Was in the Mobile Alabama Jail --- it was dangerous! | Eastern North Carolina Now

Until you have felt the sting of miscarried justice and been in a bad and filthy jail, you have no compassion for those in our County Jail right now! How many citizens have spent the night there and eaten the food to see what it really is???

    NONE, I suspect!!!

I went down for Hurricane Katrina clean-up. It cost me $1500 just to get there in 2 days of driving with a goose-neck trailer loaded to a gross weight of 24,000#. That meant no overdrive and steady pulling down I-95 / 20 / and south to Mobile. I had a dangerous blow out on the trailer and pulled off---of all places---at the Scarborough rest area!

I found out about "Alabama Jestice" at the hands of a Deputy who was also a Judge's son. He put me in cuffs / locked me up / confiscated my phone / my wife thought I was dead for a week / the food was worse than the slop my SC Granddaddy fed his pigs! The City Jail was so full that I slept on a concrete floor for 2 nights with a 1" pad under me in a cell made for 2. I was the 3rd!

I stayed there 10 days in the jail / had to have a court-appointed lawyer just to get out on bail---when I had enough cash on me to pay it when arrested!!! They won't let you out on bail there unless a local bondsman or citizen does it. A stranger from NC knows none such! It was corrupt beyond description. I complained to the local paper and FBI over violations of my Civil Rights. They didn't give a rip!!! It was their town. It was a step back 40 years in "southern hospitality" full of discrimination to any outsider. Black travelers know today---to gas up before you go through Mobile! No kidding. Civil Rights are barely there. I now know why Dr. M.L. King, Jr. Did the first Freedom March starting in Selma, Alabama, and not in Selma, NC.

Cleaning up for 10 hours a day with a big Bobcat and laborer earned me $2,000 a day---until the Deputy Dog put me in a filthy jail! It was so filthy that when transferred to the County Jail a hand reached into the shower with a cup of brown liquid. "Put this on any hairy part of your body. We don't want what they have over there in here!" They endangered my health as well with their filthy jail beside the Mobile Bay!!! Its damp mold was similar to our current Jail basement quarters.

Our Sheriff does not get to keep un-spent funds for personal use here. Theirs was under investigation after I left for his shady activities. He could "feed" prisoners with discard and freezer-burned cheap food! We had a similar Sheriff up in Nash County some years back who looked the other way when his wife picked up big brown envelopes of cash from the Bootleggers and drug dealers in Nash County.

I have no hesitation in praising Beaufort County Law Enforcement for being "Officers of the Peace" over the thugs wearing uniforms in Mobile, "Allebamie."

The worst part of the whole thing in Mobile is they have the biggest and most ornate churches I ever saw on all the corners. They are of all Denominations so it's not the Baptists there doing their show without personal morality! So many people attend that they have off-duty officers directing traffic! It was all an outward show of propriety with an underbelly of abject corruption!!!!

I don't want that here in Beaufort County!

My wife finally, after a week, filed a missing persons report with the Nash County Sheriff's Office. Within the hour a Deputy was standing on our porch. My wife's first thought was "he's dead just like I thought." Instead, she got Good News & bad = "He is alive, but he's in their jailhouse!" I could not even call out unless the person on the receiving end had a Credit Card to take the call. We had cut ours up to end high interest rates of thieving and grafting banks!

Do we want a Federal Investigation of our dilapidated and over-crowded jail because it caught fire and---with no sprinkler system---prisoners got burned alive screaming for help???

We are so much better and different than Mobile, Alabama. However, we have a similar problem with prison safety and humane treatment of people "presumed innocent until proven guilty."

Don't go to church with a big Bible and leave with eyes closed to the shortcomings in our County. Political hate is not "of Christ." Inhumane treatment, as was given his Disciples and followers, ended with burning at the stake! They knew the jailhouse---and so do I!!!!

When I was in Mobile an old architect who let us stay in his storage room his son used in college. The problem was I had a black man with me to help---the nicest you ever met with totally polite outlook. In the nice neighborhood the ladies felt threatened.

He told me they were called "buffies." Had I ever heard of that"--he asked. I told him I had heard FDR refer to women as buffies.

In Alabama that is a little white girl raised on her daddy's knee / told she is the most beautiful and wonderful thing God ever created / warned that any black man will try to rape her!

Praise and fear to excess creates "Buffies."
