    Mrs. Mary Ruth "Polly" Smith Hawkins, age 85, a resident of Chocowinity, NC died Saturday January 24, 2015 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville.

    A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday January 27, 2015 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Jason Kirkman. Pallbearers will be Justin Tyson, Bennie Bright, Jr., Gary Peed, Tim Tyson, Philip Tyson and Daniel Tyson.

    The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Polly's daughter: Janice Grissom located at 150 Union Chapel Road, Chocowinity, NC.

    Mrs. Polly was born in Beaufort County on February 18, 1929 daughter of the late William "Bill" Smith and the late Sally Clark Smith. She married Lawrence "Jr." Hawkins who preceded her in death on February 12, 1994. She was the manager of the café at Roses department store and also worked at Catos and Family Dollar. Mrs. Hawkins had a talent of making jewelry and volunteered at the Blind Center of Washington. She was a member of Haw Branch Church of Christ.

    Survivors include two daughters: Janice Grissom and her husband Philip of Chocowinity and Evelyn Tyson and her husband Bobby of Washington; a sister: Sallie Ecklin of VA; eight grandchildren: Annette Alligood, Alva "Fonzie" Crisp, III, Bennie Bright, Jr., Curtis Hannah, Patsy Tyson, Laura Carraway, Tim Tyson and Philip Tyson and fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Lawrence; two daughters: Percillia Bright and Gloria Hannah; two sisters: Fannie Mae Struck and Nancy Peed and two brothers: Bill Smith, Jr. and Bobby Smith.
