Press Release:

Why It's Important:

  • North Carolina has the third highest active duty military presence in the country.
  • 35% of North Carolina's population is military, veteran, spouse, parent or dependent.
  • The military contributes more than $30 billion to North Carolina's economy, 10% of North Carolina's economic activity, and supports 540,000 jobs in North Carolina, 340,000 in the private sector.
  • North Carolina has nearly 800,000 veterans and is in the midst of a surge of newly-minted veterans. Approximately 60,000 service personnel are expected to muster out of the military in North Carolina during 2014 through 2016.
  • Many of these individuals are in their prime working age. Eighty percent of the projected separations through 2018 will be people who are 30 years old or younger. It's estimated that 95 percent will be 40 or younger.

Supporting our Veterans and Military Families:

  • Attracting and keeping veterans in our state is an urgent priority of Governor McCrory, First Lady Ann McCrory and the entire administration.
  • That's why since taking office, our administration has launched many veteran- focused initiatives including:
    • Providing the equivalent of in-state tuition to our community colleges and UNC system universities.
    • Converting military training and past experience into college credit and/or professional licenses for things like Commercial Driver's Licenses.
    • Giving credit for military experience when determining salary schedule for veterans wanting to serve as educators.
    • Establishing the first Veterans Treatment Court to recognize the special needs of our veterans.
    • Making it easier for veterans to identify themselves to receive benefits by creating veteran driver's licenses.
    • Collecting all resources veterans and military families need in one easy Vets4NC Handbook and website.
    • Participating in public-private partnerships to care for our veterans with things like creating the new Veterans Life Center in Butner.

Going Forward:

  • We will implement an efficient and well-coordinated process to meet the needs of active duty personnel and veterans and save taxpayer money.
  • Create the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which will be responsible for:
    • Protecting and fighting for our military bases.
    • Promoting the health and safety of our veterans and military families.
    • Helping our veterans get jobs.
    • Working with the unique needs of base communities.
