Letter on Oregon Inlet to North Carolina Congressional Delegation | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     The office of Senator Bill Cook (R-District 1) released on Monday, June 08, 2015, a letter that he along with twenty two other State Senators signed pleading for assistance from the North Carolina Congressional Delegation with stabilizing Oregon Inlet.

The North Carolina Senate recently passed Senate Bill 160 (Enhance Safety & Commerce for Ports/Inlets), legislation that addresses the issue of open and navigable channels at the state's inlets and ports. Senator Bill Cook (R-District 1), Senator Harry Brown (R-District 6), and Senator Michael V. Lee (R-District 9) are the primary sponsors of the legislation. The Senate passed SB 160 in a bipartisan vote, 43-1, and the legislation sits in the House.

During the 2013 legislative session, the Senate added a provision to a bill which established the Oregon Inlet Land Acquisition Task Force. Secretary of the Department of Administration (DOA), Bill Daughtridge, was the chairman of the task force. Senators Bill Rabon (R-District 8) and Cook were appointed by Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-District 26) to represent the Senate.

"We quickly realized the need for an open and navigable channel to protect and allow economic growth in the region and for the state. Therefore, we all strongly agreed having a dependable and safe waterway passage for commercial and recreational boats is of paramount importance," Cook said.

The 2014 state budget directs DOA to proceed with re-acquiring the land around Oregon Inlet deeded to the federal government in 1958.

"Putting the inlet firmly in state control will open up opportunities to develop this waterway as it was contemplated in 1958 - as a vibrant route for commerce," Cook said.

Attached is a copy of the letter.

You are right on that "small boat" thing. I presume you are aware that the Bin Laden assault training was at and "dark island" just off the Big Ditch in Hyde County, old sport . . .

They better be small military boats to get through the Pamlico Sound, or Core Sound, or just about any sound.

Do you really think all our military activity is out of Morehead City which is south of the Pamlico Sound? Let me say, "I have some inside information about it."

How is this inlet critical to the military?

Why aren't we US Taxpayers not covering the cost of an inlet critical to the military?

Could it be excess spending all over the world from the USA trying to make people do as told???
