News Release:

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Yesterday, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) delivered a speech on the Senate floor expressing disappointment over the Senate's failure to advance the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would protect unborn children 20 weeks and older. Senator Tillis called on his colleagues to continue efforts to pass the legislation.

"I stand here today heartbroken over the failure to advance a bill that would protect the lives of unborn babies. Babies who are old enough that with proper care can survive when born at this age," said Senator Tillis. "We know what's right. Any of us who have ever watched our wives' bellies grow, as I did, any of us who have ever experienced the excitement learning of a prenatal test, any of us who have attended a baby shower, we all know. We know because of the hundreds of thousands of friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers whose own baby stories we've watched over our lives, the stories of successful deliveries, the complications, the joys and the tragedies, the beautiful stories and the bittersweet stories. They've taught the truth about the unborn. We all know."

During his speech, Senator Tillis also cited the example of three-year-old Micah Pickering, who was born prematurely at only 22 weeks. While doctors initially told Micah's parents he would not survive, he made it through after receiving state-of-the-art medical care, spending four months in a neonatal intensive care unit. Senator Tillis had the opportunity to meet Micah and his parents yesterday at the Capitol. Micah gave Senator Tillis a wristband inscribed with "Miracles for Micah," which Senator Tillis wore during his floor speech.
