Dueling Hits - The Everly Brothers - 1958 | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's note: I have initiated this new segment on BCN, where I determine the Best Music Ever ... and, 'with a little help from my friends'. I do this from my opinion, for what that is worth, where I will measure the best music that I am familiar with.

I do this for two reasons: 1) I want to expose the best music that I know to the rest of us. 2) Popular Music today may be the very worst it has ever been, and that is saying much, since I lived through Disco.

For a list of all of the contributions to this series, please click here.

As previously mentioned, there will be others who share their favorites with our BCN readers, in particular here, Bobby Tony.

The Everly Brothers, another entry into the Dueling Music greatest.

No mater how hard you may be, this song from the past should take you to a better place.

The second song "Cathy's Clown" may not have the long legs of Dream but it sure can bring out the heartbreak of teen love.
Phil Everly (left) and Don Everly (right): Above.

Phil Everly died in 2014 but Don is still alive. If you have never seen their 1983 reunion concert at Royal Albert Hall in London, you should take the time to look it up or purchase the DVD. To this old guy, they sounded just as good with the added miles, breakup and forgiveness and the harmony that comes from many years of practice.

Below is a picture from that concert, a few years, a few pounds, but still the magic.

I played both strum and Pick as well as trying to learn Duane's slide playing. PP&M and Kingston Trio were my favorite groups to mimic.
A pint of Rum and a few cokes, some wood and a match and we were ready for a night at Stone Mountain before it became a State Park. No talent required.

Thanks, Stan. Everly Brothers, it don't get no better than that. Brings back memories of first real boyfriend, close dancing, sneaking cigarettes. Today's music (in fact, I don't even call it music) is the worst ever; hard to imagine inspiring nostalgia.

I can handle those four chords, and the song is slow.

Did you pick, strum or both?

This may be one of the first songs I learned on the Guitar. An Easy C-Am-F-G Guitar Chord Progression. Now Jimi was another matter. By then I had given up on ever being anything other than a folk "Row the boat Ashore" singer and picker.

The Everly Brothers were a guilty pleasure of mine during my hard core hippie days.

From Jimi Hendrix to Don and Phil was a wide gulf.
