Camden County Commissioner Party Switch Follows Trend in Eastern North Carolina | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Press Release:

Democrats in Camden County and Eastern North Carolina are leaving party and moving towards GOP

Raleigh, N.C. - The NCGOP today welcomed Camden County Commissioner Garry Meiggs to the Republican Party. Commissioner Meiggs joins other North Carolina officials who in recent months have switched party affiliations from Democrat to Republican.

"I applaud Camden County Commissioner Garry Meiggs for joining us in the Republican Party. Serving our constituency properly heavily relies on team work, and together we are making our communities a better place to live, work, and raise a family," said Senator Bill Cook (R-District 1). "Small businesses are essential in our state, 60% of our jobs in North Carolina are in companies with 50 people or less. This year's state budget includes a comprehensive tax reform package that reduces the tax burden on North Carolina families and small businesses by close to $400 million over the next two years. Putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking families will continue to grow and create jobs here in North Carolina."

"As the party of opportunity, we are always happy to welcome new Republicans to our ranks," said NCGOP Chairman Hasan Harnett. "While we working to elect Republicans to office at every level in 2016, it is equally exciting to have Commissioner Meiggs switch party affiliations. Our local officials and their work impact our daily lives, making it important to have the right leaders in place. We're glad Commissioner Meiggs will offer another Republican voice to Camden County leadership."

"The Camden County GOP is thrilled to have Commissioner Meiggs join the Republican Party," said Lisa Brown. "Our community benefits from Republican leadership and Commissioner Meiggs will now help strengthen that leadership, bettering Camden County and the lives of all its residents. We look forward to seeing all Commissioner Meiggs will continue to do in his post as a member of the Republican Party."

This move follows a trend in both Camden County and all of eastern North Carolina where voters are abandoning the Democrat party and moving towards the GOP.
