Boldly Committed to Truth Telling in the False Face of Fakery
Banks and Shane - A local Atlanta group that has been a fixture of my life since 1972.
Long before I got old and started living in the past, I was making memories rather than recalling them. One local group of musicians has been weaving into and out of my life since 1972.
Banks Burgess and Paul Shane are some local musicians that started singing at Underground Atlanta in 1972 and used to sing at the old Steak and Ale restaurant at Northlake in Norcross, Ga. Their brand of music was generally Kingston Trio and folk, which expanded over the years to a wide variety of genres. Over the years, we have seen them many times at different venues. The eventually opened a restaurant in Sandy Springs as well as the re-incarnation of Underground Atlanta. Banks used to live in the same apartment complex as my wife and I.
Many time they have surfaced occasionally in my circle of travels. My company office was in Sandy Springs and we used to eat lunch at their restaurant on Roswell Road. One of the interesting stories about B&S is that my good buddy from high school era and I were with our wives at the Steak and Ale in 1977-8 watching Banks and Shane when his wife went into labor with their first child. Naturally, they left the show but the wife and I stayed to see the balance of the act before going to the hospital to join the baby watch.
I moved into the retirement community at Del Web in Braselton, Ga in 2008. I was not surprised that they had a following among the residents. Our clubhouse is the gathering place for all manner of performances from plays, to concerts as well as just general club meetings. Banks and Shane played here several times and I enjoyed each performance. They have added to their repertoire as any good surviving musician group must do.
It is a somewhat interesting bit of trivia for me is that my wife found one of the very few surviving vinyl albums from various moves and downsizing. I think it was the first or second album. We bought it at the Steak and Ale and had them autograph it. Somehow over the years it stayed in the collection stack even thought I have discarded or donated almost all my other records many years ago. When they first played at Deaton Creek in 2012, we had them resign the album and now I have it somewhere in the stack of things that my kids will throw out when I move on to that Steak and Ale in the sky or wherever. 1972 -2012 forty years of music and it never gets old, unlike some of the audience.
They put on a high-energy show from folk to rock with funny chatter covering all types of music. They both are very talented musicians with a very upbeat show and high energy presence learned from the Kingston Trio.

Update 4/1/2016 – This is not an April Fool Joke.
Last night we had a nother visit by one of the neighborhoods favorite groups. Banks and Shane performed three sold out shows this weekend. As usual their show was free flowing and they took request. This was billed as a Country and Rock and Roll show. The usual banter was there between takes and I even heard a few I had not heard before. Back in the 1970s they were a regular at Timothy John's bar and kept getting request for popular songs. They put together a melody. explained as a melody because they "knew parts of a lot of songs, but no all of any of the songs in the melody." They closed the event with that twenty-minute melody which is properly named the 'Timothy Johns Bar and drinking Tribute Melody.' Banks Burgess used to be a neighbor of mine when they first started playing. I told him that Deaton Creek is like an annuity for them. They can come back a couple of times a year and the crowd really loves it. That is because most of us can remember seeing them at Timothy Johns, or the Northlake Steak and Ale forty plus years ago but can't remember if we saw them last year at the home, er I mean Clubhouse.
