Governor McCrory Makes Good on Super Bowl Wager With Colorado Governor | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory is making good on the Super Bowl wager he made with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. In a video released today, Governor McCrory donned Governor Hickenlooper's personal Denver Broncos jersey and announced that food for a Colorado food bank and pet food for a Colorado animal shelter are on their way. The governor said shelters in North Carolina will also be receiving food.

"We're all winners with this Super Bowl because we're going to help feed the hungry in both Colorado and in North Carolina and also help our pets," said Governor McCrory. "Even though the Denver Broncos won the game, both North Carolina and Colorado win also."

Garner-based Butterball, LLC will be shipping 50 cases of turkey burgers and 50 cases of turkey sausages to the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver. In addition, the company will be shipping 50 cases each to Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte, the Durham Rescue Mission and the Raleigh Rescue Mission in North Carolina.

"Butterball is proud to have its roots in the great state of North Carolina and home to the finest professional football team in the country, the Carolina Panthers. We're honored to be part of Gov. Pat McCrory's wager over the Super Bowl matchup with a commitment of 100 cases of turkey products, including our burgers and smoked sausages, to go to the Food Bank of Rockies in Denver," said Kerry Doughty, president and CEO, Butterball. "We are also glad we can help feed people in North Carolina as well, with donations to food pantries here."

Governor McCrory also announced that Mars, Incorporated will be shipping 4,000 pounds of IAMS pet food made in Henderson, N.C. to the Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay and Neuter Clinic and the Waggin' Tales Canine Rescue, both in Colorado. The company will also be sending another 4,000 pounds of pet food to three North Carolina pet pantries: Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, Safe Haven for Cats Pet Food Pantry in Raleigh and Pet Food Pantry of Eastern North Carolina in Greenville.

"At Mars Petcare, we are dedicated to making a better world for pets as we know pets enrich our lives. We are happy to donate our IAMS dog and cat food, proudly made in Henderson, N.C. to help both Colorado and North Carolina families," said Allyson Park, Vice President of corporate affairs for Mars Petcare. "This donation was facilitated by our non-profit partner, GreaterGood.org whose Rescue Bank program helps us deliver more than 7 million pounds of pet food to shelters and rescue groups around the country each year."

"I am proud to have two North Carolina companies step up and help, not only those in Colorado, but also those in need here in our state," said Governor McCrory. "Thanks again to both of them for their help."

Governor McCrory will be personally returning Governor Hickenlooper's jersey to him later this week at the National Governor's Association meeting in Washington, D.C.
