Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory announced today that the cities of Dunn, Hendersonville, Kings Mountain, Lincolnton and the Town of Pembroke will receive grants to revitalize their downtowns. These grants are part of a downtown revitalization package totaling $1.2 million that Governor McCrory secured in the state budget.

"Thriving downtowns are the lifeblood of local economies across North Carolina," said Governor McCrory. "These downtown revitalization grants will help transform Main Streets into points of pride that will contribute to the economic success of communities across our state."

Each of the five municipalities will receive grants totaling $96,107 to spur economic development and revive their downtowns.

In Dunn, grant funding will be leveraged to build new sidewalks and curbs making the downtown more walkable and inviting for pedestrians.

Hendersonville will use the grants to modernize two public parking lots that will improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. The parking lots will provide public and leased parking for a variety of downtown businesses.

Kings Mountain is considering several projects including a new smartphone app to promote the businesses in the downtown district. The town is also looking at wayfinding signage to direct traffic and new raised crosswalks to increase connectivity between the two sides of Kings Mountain.

In Lincolnton, the grant will help spur downtown development by investing in several economic development programs, including substantial building rehabilitation and the downtown development fund.

Grant funds in Pembroke will be leveraged to support and implement the city's downtown master plan.

Other cities awarded grants for downtown revitalization include Burlington, Morganton, Reidsville, Rocky Mount, Shelby, Wilson and the towns of Rutherfordton and Smithfield. Contracts for these municipalities are pending.
