Beaufort County Sheriff to Seek Public Input on the Need for Modernized Jail and Court House | Eastern NC Now

Several months ago, at the encouragement of several County Commissioners and others from the public, Sheriff Ernie Coleman applied for assistance from the National Institute of Corrections to conduct an assessment of our Jail and Justice System.

    Several months ago, at the encouragement of several County Commissioners and others from the public, Sheriff Ernie Coleman applied for assistance from the National Institute of Corrections to conduct an assessment of our Jail and Justice System. This assessment will give everyone an idea of where our system and facilities stand when compared to industry standards and best practices. This assessment is being conducted at no cost to Beaufort County. Representatives selected by the National Institute of Corrections will analyze our system and provide a written report documenting their findings.

    On Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at 8:00am, a Town Hall style meeting will be held in the Civil Courtroom, located on the 1st floor of the Beaufort County Courthouse. The address of the Beaufort County Courthouse is 112 West 2nd St. in Washington. This meeting, open to the public, will explain what the National Institute of Corrections is, the resources that are available to us, and give an explanation of what a Jail and Justice System Assessment is.

The city council has only made two official acts as of February 16, 2026
While this afternoon’s update once again included increased probabilities of moderate to major impacts, it will likely be tomorrow before we receive specific accumulation details.
Government and its bureaucracy are not perfect, and never has been in this self-governed society, here at the local level, at our state level, and at our federal level, therefore, it is incumbent upon all elected politicians to seek a comfortable level of representation for our constituents.
Beaufort County is implementing a new emergency alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts via phone and email.

Has the local government acted responsibly and transparently?
Beaufort County Commissioners meet, and work by a majority vote to do the business of those constituents they purport to represent.
Waste, fraud, abuse and incompetence continue to govern county school budgets and decision making.

However, if one believes that Beaufort County government is in full command of the issues of our times, here locally, one might need to steel their resolve for a more perfect understanding of the intellect possessed by the Center-Left /Left Coalition.
To borrow a big phrase from this salient plan originating at the federal level, under President Trump's watchful eye, whose time has finally arrived, even here in the mispent realm of Beaufort County government(s).
We must vet, and elect those who will actually represent the people or we will be stuck with the same mess we have now.

The process to close Snowden continues to move forward. Time is running out to oppose this decision.
Closing Snowden is an intentional act based on poor information and a lack of oversight and accountability by the Superintendent and School Board.
