The Issue - Sign the Petition to Save Snowden
This school is not just a place of education; it is the soul of our community. The recent decision to close our school has ignited a profound sense of urgency among residents, sparking a movement to challenge this decision through the courts.
S W Snowden Elementary School serves as an essential pillar for families in Aurora, providing quality education and a safe learning environment for our children. Closing this institution would not only disrupt the education of students but also fracture a vital community bond. We have witnessed countless students grow into responsible adults, contributing positively to society, all due to the solid foundation laid at Snowden.
The economic impact of this closure cannot be overlooked. Our small town relies heavily on the existence of the school; the school's closure would likely result in a decrease in population, further exacerbating economic challenges in our area.
Moreover, community schools are the center in small towns, hosting events that bring people together, forging social connections, and fostering unity. With the potential loss of Snowden, we risk losing those cherished gatherings that help maintain the close-knit nature of Aurora.
Facts and statistics reinforce our stance. According to a report by the Journal of Resesarch in Rural Education, communities that lose educational institutions face significant economic and social setbacks. Our objective is clear: to preserve S W Snowden Elementary School for future generations, maintaining the stability and promise it represents.
We urge the Beaufort County school board, policymakers, and community leaders to reconsider this decision, considering the far-reaching implications it holds for every resident of our beloved town and county. Your support is vital in our fight to keep our school open and thriving. Stand with us in protecting the heart of Aurora. Sign this petition to voice your opposition against the closure and help secure a promising future for our community.

CV: I think you are probably right. My guess is that the other community schools on the southside of the river aren't safe for so long either.

VZ, with Snowden gone, the Deep State within our school system has now probably put a target on the back of Bath Elementary.

I consider the closing of Snowden School to not only be a huge loss to Aurora, but also to all of Beaufort County. Community schools should be better appreciated. When they are gone, they are not easily replaced.

Despite the fact that most of the commenters on this site seem to have an understanding of the successes accomplished at S.W. Snowden School, there is still some incorrect information being told as truth within the community as a whole. Allow me to present the official record:
The truth is Snowden School has made an impressive comeback from the damage brought about by the time of remote learning during the covid scare. While all schools had big challenges during this episode, I believe rural schools like Snowden were disproportionally harmed during that time. Over the last three years the school has been making steady progress. This past year Snowden made tremendous gains. The school grade increased by over eight points. This spike upward moved the school up an entire letter grade. In the last year as a school Snowden strongly returned to its former solid status. Last year, Snowden was one of the two Beaufort County schools that exceeded expectations, and they exceeded expectations more than any other school in our county. We should all commend the students and staff of S.W. Snowden for their extraordinary accomplishments. I was amazed and honored to be able to see what was done at Snowden in its last year as a Beaufort County School. We should all be proud of the students, staff, and community of Aurora and Richland Township. I know I am. |

Closing Snowden School in Aurora, NC is an incredibly terrible decision made by the Beaufort County Board of Education, lacking all manner of foresight, backed by erroneous data, done to achieve a petty political rung on a bad governing ladder - Stan Deatherage, Conservative, Beaufort County Commissioner

Government and its bureaucracy are not perfect, and never has been in this self-governed society, here at the local level, at our state level, and at our federal level, therefore, it is incumbent upon all elected politicians to seek a comfortable level of representation for our constituents.
