Press Release:

College for Kids is a series of fun and educational programs that will get them moving and thinking. Beaufort County Community College offers this opportunity for youth to sample careers, hobbies and skillsets.

Woodworking Basics

Participants will learn basic woodworking skills while building creative projects including a washer game, miniature catapult, and a custom Mason jar candy dispenser. Carpentry teacher David Dixon will inspire students to broaden their minds to the possibilities of woodworking while teaching them basic skills that can be used in any project. It will take place on July 11-14 from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and costs $55.

High School Firefighter Training

Fire academy instructor Johnny Williams will give prospective firefighters the opportunity to use the new training tower. Participants will learn to use ladders and fire extinguishers, experience ventilation practices and get air pack training. Students will leave with a taste of what the real job is like. If students are sponsored by a fire agency the $70 course fee will be waived. Students must be affiliated with a fire department to register for the class. This camp takes place July 11-14 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Personal Fitness and Self Defense

The sports and fitness camp will teach participants about fitness and healthy living through various sports, fitness activities and self-defense training. Students will also be able to learn healthy lifestyles from health and fitness instructor Ron Baldwin through using the new BCCC Beau-Fitt trail on campus. This class will take place from July 25-28 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and cost $55.

Follow Me to the Farm

This program is for youth who love digging in the dirt, being outside and messing around in the kitchen. The Farm to Table program is a chance for them to learn about food first hand. They will work on a farm, grow vegetables and harvest seeds, and cook healthy snacks with nutritious foods. BCCC is partnering with Raised on a Barn Farm to provide experiences in hands-on farming, composting, exercising and cooking. Youth will be placed in a session based on their age. Sessions running from August 1-4 and August 8-11 still have openings. The class runs from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and costs $65.

Other classes coming up from the Continuing Education Department:

CDL Truck Driving

Students will train to drive a Class A combination vehicle and prepare for the NC DMV commercial driver's license exam, including the pre-trip inspection, off-road skills test and the driving test. Truck drivers are in high demand. Funding assistance may be available through your local NCWorks Center. There are also scholarships available through State Employees Credit Union, Golden Leaf and the BCCC Foundation. This program is an online hybrid program, meaning that there will be online assignments apart from on-campus driving during the weekends. The course costs $226 and requires one textbook. It will run from July 11 through November 6.
