Greenville To Benefit From 10th Street Connector Project | Eastern North Carolina Now

Project to provide economic opportunities, increase traffic flow, connect East Carolina

    Greenville, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory and Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson toured the 10th Street Connector project in Greenville today to survey progress of construction currently underway. The $30 million project will improve traffic flow in Greenville and directly connect Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University's main campus with its medical campus.

    "We are already hearing from the business community that the 10th Street Connector is creating redevelopment opportunities in the area," said Governor McCrory. "Once completed, this project will help bring new business to downtown Greenville, reduce traffic congestion, better connect people with health care and East Carolina University, and and improve the quality of life and the economic vitality of the entire region."



    The governor received an update on the progress and the scope of the project that includes the conversion of Statonsburg Road into a four-lane divided highway with a landscaped median. Work on the 10th Street Connector in Greenville began in October 2015 and is expected to be completed by November 2018.

    "The 10th Street Connector is a 'Complete Street' project because it is multimodal and encompasses new bike lanes, sidewalks and transit stops along the entire length of the corridor," Secretary Nick Tennyson said. "The project will improve the safety and flow of traffic throughout the corridor for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians."

    Governor McCrory also highlighted several other projects in eastern North Carolina that will further job creation and economic development in the region.



    The Greenville Southwest Bypass is one of the largest transportation projects underway in the state. The $238 million project begins approximately two miles south of Ayden and ends at the U.S. 264 Bypass, west of Greenville. Project construction will begin this month and is expected to be completed by June 2019.

    Last month the governor announced a new intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County that will position the state as a leader in enhanced freight movement. CSX's 'Carolina Connector' is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs throughout North Carolina as a result of the terminal's operations. The new intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County is expected to open in 2020.
