    Mrs. Carley Burch Johnston Sowder, age 69, a resident of Belhaven, NC died Friday December 9, 2016 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville.

    A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday December 13, 2016 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven officiated by Rev. Cris Noble. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Sowder was born in Beaufort County on February 3, 1947 daughter of the late Edward Russell Johnston and the late Carley Burchie Smith Johnston. She was a graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School. On June 21, 2010 she married Joel Wayne Sowder who survives. Mrs. Sowder was a homemaker who worked in the bookkeeping field. She loved crafts and animals and was willing to take in any abandoned pet.

    Surviving along with her husband Joel of the home include a daughter: Carley "Lee" Tetterton Baynor of Edenton; two brothers: Edward Russell "Rusty" Johnston and his wife Laura of Wake Forest and Arthur S. Johnston and his wife Wanda Underwood of Greenville; five grandchildren: Dalton Baynor, Masey Baynor, Cole Baynor, Tanner Baynor and Scott Ellis Tetterton and a great granddaughter: Dailynn Baynor. Mrs. Sowder was predeceased by a son: Scott Ellis Tetterton.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks for memorial contributions to be made to the Carley Sowder Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1465, Washington, NC 27889.
