Governor to Highlight Stories of Several Invited Guests

RALEIGH: In his first State of the State address tonight, Governor Cooper plans to lay out his hopeful vision for North Carolina and emphasize areas of common ground to move North Carolina forward.

Governor Cooper's goal is a state where North Carolinians are better educated, healthier, and have more money in their pockets. Job recruitment, raising teacher pay, fighting the opioid crisis, boosting infrastructure, and recovering from natural disasters that have damaged our communities are common ground areas where legislators and Governor Cooper can work together. Governor Cooper recently laid out an aggressive plan to make North Carolina a Top Ten Educated State by 2025, a plan he will discuss tonight.

In addition, the Governor invited six guests who represent the best of North Carolina and their communities:

  • Tom Bashore is the Chief of Police for the Town of Nashville and is working to combat the opioid crisis.
  • Mackenzie Hinson is a twelve-year-old from Grantham in Wayne County who founded the "Make A Difference Food Pantry" and helped survivors of Hurricane Matthew.
  • Jasmine Lauer teaches at Sanderson High School in Wake County and is one of many teachers who reaches into her own pocket to afford school supplies for her class.
  • Sabrina Peacock is from Guilford County and entered the classroom as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. Today, she teaches third grade at Oak Hill Elementary, a Title One school, working to ensure that every student has access to a quality education.
  • Wendell Tabb is a 30-year veteran teacher in Durham whose experience in the classroom is a benefit for his students, and other teachers.
  • Charlotte Vick manages Vick Family Farms in Wilson, NC. Vick Family Farms has expanded its sweet potato crops in recent years and is rapidly increasing production to meet global demand.
