Governor Cooper Refuses to Help NC Farmers | Eastern North Carolina Now

Last week Governor Cooper and Attorney General Stein withdrew North Carolina from litigation challenging government overreach on farmers.

Press Release:

Raleigh, NC     Today Governor Cooper vetoed House Bill 467, a bill that would prevent farmers from being taken advantage of in court. It limits compensatory damages in nuisance lawsuits against farmers to the fair market value of the plaintiff's property. An overwhelming amount of lawsuits have been filed against North Carolina's farmers by people wishing to get rich. House Bill 467 is a common sense bill that simply prevents people from suing farmers, in the case of nuisances or damages, for more than their property is actually worth. After trial lawyers and environmentalists funneled millions of dollars into Governor Cooper's campaign accounts, it is clear to see where his loyalty lies.

"With Governor Cooper's veto of House Bill 467, and his recent move to empower the federal government with ownership of small streams and marshlands on North Carolina farms, Cooper has demonstrated that he will side with the Washington bureaucrats, trial lawyers, and out of state environmentalists over North Carolina's family farmers. His attacks on North Carolina farmers show just how out of touch he is with hard working families in our state." - NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes

"I am incredibly disappointed in Governor Cooper for once again turning his back on family farmers and rural North Carolina and putting out of state trial lawyers first with this misguided veto." - Senator Brent Jackson (R-Sampson)

Just a few weeks ago Governor Cooper tried to leave our farmers out to dry by removing North Carolina from the litigation challenging the Waters of the US (WOTUS) rule, which extended federal jurisdiction to all waters connecting to navigable waters. Most of these smaller waters are located on private farm land, therefore allowing the government to gain control of these private farms.
