The Passing of Music Icons 2017 - Glen Campbell - August 8, 2017 | Eastern North Carolina Now

Glen Campbell August 8, 2017

Glen has been suffering Alzheimer's Disease since 2011 and finally succumbed on August 8, 2017. I have written about the TV documentary before which covers the sad tail of his journey.

Here is the link to that post.

Most people will remember Glen for his numerous hits in the 1970s and perhaps his TV show The Glen Campbell Good Time Hour. Before he became a headliner he was one of the most versatile studio session musicians. Glen was one of the legendary LA "Wrecking Crew" and I've read he played on many sessions with Phil Spector, Sonny & Cher, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Jan & Dean and so many others before making it big solo.

Glen once said he was a mediocre singer blessed with some good material. That was probably a gross understatement. Two songwriters provided Glen with the words and music that eventually moved him to center stage.

Jimmy Webb

  • Wichita Lineman – Glen Campbell, 1969
  • Galveston – Glen Campbell, 1969
  • All I Know – Art Garfunkel, 1973
  • Honey Come Back – Glen Campbell, 1970
  • By The Time I Get To Phoenix – Glen Campbell, 1967

John Hartford

  • "Gentle on My Mind" 1967

Of all the songs he sang perhaps my favorite is one that never really made a big hit but it seems appropriate with his passing.

So right ... videos are integral in helping to tell the story.

Youtube is an amazing format to see some of the old acts even with the multiple copyright issues and the broken links that inevitable occur. Through this format I have been able to learn songs by watching the chording structure and progression. Glen had perfect pitch and enough knowledge and talent to pick up any music even though he did not read or write music notation.

It sure as heck beats the old pick up the needle and play again approach which was not kind to the vinyl editions of my youth.

Exactly. What a weird set. Folks are better now at staging a performance.

He was a great performer.

I saw a video at the end of his show, where he was given his guitar by one of the dancing extra girls, and then he launched into "If You Could Read my Mind", and had the song done in 3 minutes and some change; a real trouper.

Truly he was a very great talent on loan from God. Probably my favorite song by Glen was "Break My Mind." By saying favorite that does not discount any of this great body of work. Like others, Glen went off the tracks for a while and then returned and shared his great work and personality. His smile could match his music. Blue skies forever Glen Campbell.

Glen Campbell was a rare performer who lived to do only one thing - perform.

One never saw Glen too far away from his guitar, except from the one time he was miscast as LeBeouf in the first "True Grit".
