Chocowinity Middle School is lucky to have volunteers that work with our students on a weekly basis, helping with math and reading. Richard Potter works with Melanie Taylor and her fifth graders every week. He has been volunteering with CMS for over ten years now and is a valuable member of our school. A large part of of his time is spent reading with students - reading AR books, magazine articles, or nonfiction texts. Potter has had a wide array of experiences and shares these with students when appropriate. Being an avid reader and public volunteer at many events, he loves interacting with students and they are excited when they see his familiar face. Not only does he assist with helping students with reading skills, he also helps math problems as well. On his days off, he will come out to have lunch with the students and find out how their days are going.

Another helper in Melanie Taylor's classroom is Tammy Turnage. She is a parent volunteer who helps out each with with filing papers, checking assignements, and organizing materials.

"Mrs. Turnage is a great asset for our classes because she is so willing to do anything we need her to do and understands the ups and downs of a volunteer's day. Mrs. Turnage is willing to work in any capacity I need her to fill," commented Taylor. Turnage has worked with students on remediation skills and has motivated many students to try their best.

In Kellyn Wright's fifth grade math classroom, Ed Harris volunteers weekly. Before his retirement, Harris served as both a principal and superintendent of schools. He uses his extensive educational knowledge to help students and teachers come up with new math ideas. He works weekly with the fifth graders to review and remediate math skills and encourages them with new ideas and stories.

Another pair of volunteers our school is lucky to have is Ed and Jo Ann Walker, parents of former CMS students. The Walkers work with fifth and sixth graders reading and discussing either books students are reading or nonfiction texts they choose together. The Walkers have both volunteered their time to work with students over the years as their own children attended CMS and have graciously continued to spend their time working with our students.

Chocowinity Middle School appreciates and values everything these and all of the volunteers at our school do to help our students reach greatness.
Potter reads with fifth grader Abigail Gurganus.

Harris and fifth grader Hunter Bullock work on some math problems.
