The Passing of Music Icons 2017 – David Cassidy – November 21, 2017 | Eastern North Carolina Now

This is a work in progress for the year 2017. When a music Icon passes, their life is documented in many online tributes. When I started this series, I had the intention of recalling personal memories relating to the musician. While there are many sources for the details of their life and death, for many years, I have tried to capture my personal feelings when a music Icon I enjoyed passes. I usually try to write a contemporaneous note and compile them at end of the year. I do this just as a reminder that all things must pass and musicians mark the mood of the times with their music. - Bobby Tony

The Passing of Music Icons 2017 – David Cassidy – November 21, 2017

April 12, 1950 – November 21, 2017

While I was never a big fan of David Cassidy, it was more due to age difference than musical influence. As part of The Partridge Family (TV Series 1970–1974) he made a great impact on the TV and Musical landscape for many of the teens of that era. His following among teen age girls eclipsed Elvis in his heyday and many others mainly do to the blending of TV and Music into a single format. His fan club was one of the largest of any entertainer due to the TV exposure. I was 25 years old when the TV show started and in the beginning of a readjustment back to civilian life which did not include much TV. The main exception was Archie Bunker but that is another story.

His was perhaps the teen idol that was a continuation of Ricky Nelson of the 1950's and Bobby Sherman of the 1960's. Like many musicians, he suffered from drug abuse, alcoholism and later in life from dementia. He passed on November 21, 2017 at 67 years old. Arguably, his most famous song was "I think I love You". Below is a clip from the TV series

I apologize for the brevity of the post. I was packing for a holiday trip and did not spend sufficient time. David's Father Jack Cassidy also suffered from alcoholism as well as bi-polar issues. My best memory of Jack is from his appearances on Columbo and Mccloud. His most practiced smile was memorable because it could convey both Happiness and Mischievous intent. His death was tragic.

David suffered from the same affliction of dementia that his mother did.

Here is a clip from the Partridge family bad boy Danny Bonaduce discusing his relationship with David.

His 1/2 brother Shaun Cassidy is also an accomplished performer and producer. Sometimes performing talent carries a high toll on the performer.

David Cassidy was the progeny of Jack Cassidy - mostly a broadway actor centered in New York City during the "Mad Men" days - and Shirley Jones, best known for her fine role as Laurie from "Oklahoma" - one of the great American musicals of all time. David came from talent, and while, I considered the Partridge Family a comedy act for me, and something very real for the teenie boppers, David Cassidy was a talented guy, and grew to be, by most accounts, a really nice guy.

God bless his soul, as we bless most all souls of the departed.

I did, however, laugh this week when Charlie Manson passed into the waiting hands of Lucifer.
