    Mr. Whit Jay Smith, Jr., age 83, a resident of Washington, NC died Thursday February 8, 2018 at his home.

    A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends at the home at The Willows.

    Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on July 20, 1934 son of the late Whit Jay Smith, Sr. and the late Mary Woolard Smith Toler. He attended Washington City Schools. Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Navy during Korea. On July 6, 1954 he married the former Nola May Waters who survives. He was retired from Texas Gulf Inc. in Aurora.

    Surviving along with his wife: Nola of the home include a daughter: Terry Smith Walker and husband Steve of Washington; two sons: Whit Jay Smith III and wife Kathy of Hilton Head, SC and Monnie Allen Smith of Charlotte; four grandchildren: Kasey Smith Hearne and husband Mitch, Whitney Smith Edens and husband Austin, Tyler Walker and Scott Walker and two great grandchildren: Knox and Miles Hearn. Mr. Smith was predeceased by two sisters: Hazel Smith Towers and Kathleen Smith Gillikin.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Beaufort County Humane Society, P.O. Box 33, Washington, NC 27889.
