Erica Smith Wants to Bring California Liberalism to North Carolina; What About Her Primary Opponent? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Charlotte, N.C. — Lurching even further to the left this weekend, North Carolina State Senator Erica Smith campaigned with and endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Cal Cunningham attended the same event, but was radio silent on whether or not he would like to see the California senator and her radical agenda in the White House.

It's easy to see why Harris, who has called for the elimination of employer-based health insurance on multiple occasions, cosponsors Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All bill, has advocated for taxpayer funded health care for illegal immigrants, wants to decriminalize illegal border crossings, and supports the Green New Deal, would be an appealing candidate for Smith.

The State Senator has taken a number of radical positions of her own lately, including:

  • Praised for Elizabeth Warren's defense of Medicare for All during the second presidential debate (Twitter, 7/30/19)
  • Supported the Green New Deal (The Hardy Report, 8/11/19, 13:47)
  • Supported Sheila Jackson Lee's reparations bill (Twitter, 7/30/19)
  • Suggested President Trump has committed "tons of impeachable offenses" and said that she would like to see him "behind bars" (The Rick Smith Show, 8/13/19, 1:17:20)

Cal Cunningham, however, has said very little to say about the Democratic presidential primary other than that the ideas coming out of it are "refreshing." Those comments, along with Cunningham's call to begin impeachment hearings, a fringe position that not even Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi support, came during his only substantive interview of the race. That sit down with Capital Tonight was on the night he announced his candidacy - 70 DAYS AGO!

Smith's endorsement begs the following question: Does Cal Cunningham also want to bring California liberalism to North Carolina, or would he prefer one of the other socialists in the race?
