“Chip” John Allen Hewitt II, beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at his home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Clair’s Church of Christ Cemetery officiated by Craig Hagen. The family will receive friends at his home located at 92 Clarendon Avenue, Bayview.

Chip was a retired electrical lineman and loved fishing and football. A man with a heart of gold, Chip will be sorely missed by a trove of family and friends as a man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.

Chip was born on June 18, 1965, to Ruth Waters Hewitt and John Allen Hewitt I. Chip is survived by his mother, Ruth Waters Hewitt of the home; his significant other Karen Hodges; his sisters, Beverly Foreman and her husband Charles, Barbie Alligood and her husband Tommy, Eva Hewitt Leggett and her husband Jeff, and Carol Hewitt; his brothers, Mark Elzey and his wife Joann, Michael Elzey and his wife Betty, and John Wayne Hewitt. Chip is also survived by a great number of nieces and nephews (all knot-heads to use Chip’s opinion) that he loved and cherished and his cats Scoot and Skat. Chip’s death was preceded by that of his hero and father, John Allen Hewitt I and his paternal and maternal grandparents, Ruffin and Betty Hewitt and William and Eva Waters.

Chip’s nephews and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers and are as follows: Michael Norman II, David Allen Dew II, Jonathan Mark Elzey II, Patrick Allen Elzey, Stephen Allan Sullivan II, Todd Kalmowitz, Matthew Kalmowitz and Doug Hardison. Honorary pallbearers include Mike Rees, Eddie Mullen, Neal Duncan, Andrew Allen Spencer, Jacob Hardison, special “brothers”/friends — “Punkin” Charles B. Foreman, “Bro” Jeffery S. Leggett and his Cowboy buddy Tommy Alligood, and his eldest niece, little “sissy” — Michelle Smith Hardison – a very loving and caring companion in times of great need and the Bath Pirates football team — The Wrecking Crew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John Allen Hewitt II, c/o P.O. Box 699, Washington, NC 27889.
