Twenty-two Students from Southside High School Visited East Carolina University

In commemoration of Women's History Month, which is observed in March, twenty-two students from Southside High School visited East Carolina University on March 30.

Young ladies from the freshmen, sophomore, and junior classes with at least a 3.0 grade point average were exposed to non-traditional fields such as engineering, a field in which men outnumber women six to one at ECU. The math and science curriculum was the emphasis of the day.

In addition to an admissions session, campus tour, and lunch in the West End Dining Hall, students experienced an afternoon with engineering students and toured the Cisco Programming Lab and the Robotics Lab. Students received purple and gold book bags from the admissions staff and were able to enjoy bowling and billiards in the Student Union.

The trip was sponsored by Sophisticated Ladies of Southside High School. The host was Tarrick Cox, Senior Associate Director of Admissions at ECU.

Stephen McLawhorn digs Star Wars ... Gets a Cool T for his Effort

Southside High School students enrolled in the Microsoft IT Academy wrote and mailed letters to businesses. Students were instructed to select their favorite business and to write a goodwill letter explaining their reasons for selecting that business. Some students enjoyed the assignment so much that they wrote multiple letters.

Local business favorites were Hibbetts, Andy's, Down on Main, and McDonald's. Many of the businesses responded with coupons, and several businesses indicated they were posting the letter in their employee lounge for their employees to see. Stephen McLawhorn wrote to LucasFilm Ltd. about how much he enjoyed their films and the products that they produce. He received a very nice reply from the company along with a T-shirt.

This assignment gave students an opportunity to write an original letter in the correct business format and generate an envelope automatically using Word 2010. After students revised and corrected any errors, they learned that they must sign business letters with blue or black ink. They then learned how to properly fold a letter and stuff an envelope. Bill Lake and Kathy Clark are Microsoft IT Academy teachers.
