Late State Senator's Voice From the Past Is Pertinent Today | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Commentary:

We get many request from an abundance of good causes to help them raise money. We decline nearly all of them. But the Christian Action League is a notable exception.

Not only does Dr. Mark Creech submit weekly columns without ever having ask for compensation, but based on our own experience we know they make a substantial difference in the halls of state government. This state would be a poorer place to live were it not for Marck Creech and his organization. They need help now. We hope you will consider making a donation. Thank you and may God bless you real good for helping His work getting done.

The late State Senator Robert C. Carpenter served eight terms in the North Carolina Senate (1988-2004). Carpenter was a World War II Vet, who flew planes for the United States Navy during that great conflict. He would later graduate from the University of Virginia School of Consumer Banking, and serve as a bank executive in Franklin, North Carolina for many years. He was beloved and highly esteemed by his constituents in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania counties. His name today is memorialized on the Robert C. Carpenter Community Facilities Building in Macon County.

Carpenter's wife, Helen, is still living and presently in her 90s. So when she learned that Dr. Mark Creech was to be the guest speaker at South Macon Baptist Church in Franklin last February, she insisted on braving the snow and bitter cold that Sunday to be present for the service.

Dr. Creech said that it was a very happy reunion.

"I had not seen Helen for a few years. She was accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Danny Prince. Helen is such a precious lady, a deeply dedicated Christian, and she's also quite savvy about politics. When she and her husband, Sen. Carpenter, were in Raleigh, they were in charge of the General Assembly's Chapel services and they had something planned for every day, many times with exceptional guest speakers. I cherish her friendship," said Dr. Creech. "Any time she's around, you can expect a blessing."

Recently, Mrs. Carpenter called Dr. Creech to share with him something she had found in her home. It was a letter Senator Carpenter had written, which was dated July 19, 2001. The letter said the following:

    "To Whom It May Concern,

"Mark H. Creech, without a doubt, has helped more this year in the General Assembly to make legislation which positively affects our Christian culture in North Carolina more than anyone ever before him. The speech he gave in the Judiciary II Committee in support of the Infant Homicide Prevention Act was tremendously eloquent. The vote came shortly after, resulting in a unanimous vote for the bill, and has now been signed by the Governor. [Up to this point, the bill had been stalled in Committee]. This is big pro-life legislation.

"The Lord loves a cheerful giver and to give to such a noble cause as the Christian Action League of North Carolina is truly noble itself. We all know how it costs to run publications, transportation costs across the width and breadth of this great state, telephone costs, and the list goes on. So I appeal to you in a cheerful spirit to give to assist Mark, and the brief paragraph above about him is just a tiny bit of his great ability and action here in the General Assembly.

"Finally, we are reminded in the Bible about the widow's mite and how this lady gave, not out of her surplus, because she had no surplus, but gave to help solve a need. Equating this to the Christian Action League, I appeal to you give to see this tremendous effort continue in the General Assembly. God will BLESS YOU abundantly, and we will all praise the Lord!

    "In God's Infinite Love,

    Senator Bob Carpenter

    "P.S. We love old Mark."

Dr. Creech said that he doesn't remember seeing the letter before, and he doesn't know to whom the letter was sent, but its purpose must have been to help the League when its funds were low.

Rev. Jack Marshburn, pastor of Tar Landing Baptist Church in Jacksonville, and president of the Christian Action League said that he feels "the late Senator's voice from the past is very pertinent today."

"There is nothing about the ministry of the Christian Action League that is any less effective these days than it was in 2001. Rev. Creech's twenty-years of experience in those hallowed halls of power have made him more influential now than he was when the letter by Sen. Carpenter was written," said Marshburn.

Marshburn went on to note that CBN News recently reported that because of COVID 19, almost two-thirds of churches are reporting a drop in giving. "Something like that hits the Christian Action League hard because most of the League's support comes from churches," he said.

The Christian Action League is currently endeavoring to find 200 people/churches/groups who will give just $100.

"We hope and pray this small amount, given by this many, might get us through the coronavirus crisis until things start to normalize. We want to be sensitive to the struggle of the churches, but I think most of them can give $100," said Marshburn. "Of course, a gift of any size, $10, $25, $50, or much more, would be greatly appreciated at this time. We must keep this ministry, which is so strategic to our Christian values in the public policy arena operative."
