    Mrs. Erma Harris Sawyer, age 98, a resident of Washington, NC died Wednesday August 12, 2020 at River Trace Nursing Center of Washington.

    Due to COVID-19, a private graveside service will be held for the family.

    Mrs. Sawyer was born in Beaufort County on March 25, 1922, daughter of the late Lonnie Lee Harris and the late Mary Otalee Radcliffe Harris. She was a graduate of Pantego High School. Following high school, she worked at the Newport News Shipyard during World War II and helped in the building of ships. Later she was an administrative assistant with Woodstock REA of Belhaven and FHA in Red Springs. On December 5, 1955 she married Gilbert Ellis Sawyer who preceded her in death on February 8, 1988. She was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ.

    Survivors include her children: Dorinda P. Bateman (Topper-deceased) of Belhaven, Ellwood A. Sprouse, Jr. (Marlene) of Washington, Marion S. Harrington (Patrick) of Bath and Christina S. Hall (Mark) of Clayton; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Yeatesville Cemetery, Inc., 18947 US Hwy. 264 East, Pinetown, NC 27865.
