In Support of Mattie Lawson | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's note: Diane is a regular contributor to BCN, who is always well informed, and quite generous in her proportions of that well presented wisdom that does help to steer the patriot heart in a purposeful, and dedicated direction. Her multiple submissions can be found here in BCN. We thank Diane for her support of all issues, and individuals that are real, genuine.

I understand that Rep. Walter Jones has come out to support Arthur Williams in the run-off election for NC House for district 6. I'm sure there is a political reason.

I have great respect for Rep. Jones and appreciate his position on the NDAA, immigration, and use of military force. I know he has a big heart when it comes to our military. But nevertheless, he is a politician.

I'd like to offer support for Mattie Lawson, who won the primary but was challenged by Williams in a run-off. I'm not a politician. I have no money invested. I have no promises to fulfill. I owe no favors. I have no agenda other than making sure that the NC General Assembly is comprised of representatives who are knowledgeable, competent, moral, and principled. The more I can inherently trust the representatives of our state, the less time I have to spend keeping an eye on them and more time I can spend with my family.

I've known Mattie for a few years now and I know her character. She is committed to principles and committed to doing what's right for the people of the state. Mattie doesn't see matters in terms of right or left; she sees them as right or wrong. Mattie contacted me early last year because she wanted to try to organize a summer program for children where they could learn about government and enjoy activities that would allow them to apply government principles. The passion she had for that program was inspiring and I knew she was a person committed to the values she wanted to promote. I volunteer with a group that offers constitutional seminars and Mattie attends them. I can't say that about any other state representative except for Hood Richardson, who is a Beaufort County Commissioner. She doesn't just talk the talk; she walks the walk. And for that reason, I trust her. She is exactly the type of candidate we need in the NC Assembly.

She knows where government belongs and where it doesn't belong.

I know Arthur Williams recently switched parties. I remember the day he made that announcement. I'm sure he is a very nice man, but from a voter's point of view, I just don't know how you can trust a person who switches parties but yet has no record of proving that will take his new platform seriously or will vote consistently.

The 2013 Assembly session is going to have many demands and perhaps ever some serious ideological challenges. As the federal government becomes more out-of-touch with Americans and tests the limits of individual rights and freedoms, we all are beginning to see the importance of having a strong state to protect and provide for us. We need jobs but we also need the right to be secure in our property and pursuit of happiness. I trust Mattie for the challenges that lie ahead. She is tried and true. She is gracious and kind. I'm proud to know her and delighted that a person of her caliber and character is running to represent us.

Again, I have no agenda or vested interests in professing my support. I only want what is best for my state of North Carolina. I urge everyone to please get out and vote for Mattie on Tuesday, July 17th .

Thanks for the sentiment Raphael, but I don't think I have the "right stuff" either, which would be the money.

Here in eastern North Carolina, the big money boys will only give money to politician's, who will sell off their people's government, and whatever integrity the politician had when they started. There are plenty of good ole boys, who don't understand that you better start electing smarter people to serve with integrity - not less - and soon.

I have been watching this for decades now, and it is apparently not getting any better, but fortunately, not getting any worse.

There is one change; however, the internet, and the Tea Party.

The internet has the power to educate, and the Tea Party is a vessell for the good grass roots folks, who, at times to people like me, seem a bit naive or under educated on some issues, but they are good people, with good intentions, and they are eventually getting it right.

And you know something, they are getting smarter, and I do believe they will stay true to their hard won wisdom.

Right now for me: The internet to educate and inform, and the folks in the Tea Party - because of their devotion and their inspiration - may be America's greatest hope.

I'm counting on it.

Stan, why don't you run against Jones in the Congressional primary? He has been disappointing us with many of his votes lately, and now he has really stepped across the line with the endorsement of Arthur Obamacare Williams. Please think about. We need someone who has the backbone to stand up to the Washington DC establishment and the Raleigh establishment.

Walter Jones was supposed to do as he agreed to do, long ago, and submit to voluntary term limits as per the "Contract with America."

Career politicians bring few new good ideas to the dais, and Walter is no different.

I feel like it is time for myself to take another voluntary retirement from the county commission in 2014. I took a two-year hiatus in 2002.

There is one caveat; however, to me stepping down: I promised Hood that we would find someone who had enough political and intellectual backbone to stand up to the special interests group that would sell off the people's government bit by bit.

We both know those qualities when we see them, and neither of us are easily impressed. The fire does get rather hot at its core.

As a relative point of interest, a Walter Jones would not have that "right stuff" that Hood or I are seeking for the Beaufort County Commission.

It's remarkable how a 9 term Republican congressman, and a 5 term Democrat NC Senator does not measure up to the Hood / Stan vision of a politician who could stand tall enough to weather local Beaufort County politics.

I quit supporting Walter long ago, when he reneged on his agreement with the "Contract with America." One's word should be their bond, especially for a politician in our representative form of government.

Jones endorsement was a result of 1) a request from Thom Tillis who wants a sock puppet instead of a legislator from our district and knows that Williams fits that bill and 2) $1,000 payment to Jones from Williams (check his campaign reports). Jones has been brownnosing the DC beltway establishment lately, which is why he voted against conservatives on the key vote on the debt ceiling increase, and why beltway establishment enforcer Eric Cantor came to NC to endorse Jones in Jones' primary. I guess it is just one more step to brownnose the squish we have as an NC House Speaker. Endorsing Awful Arthur Williams is one more big indicator that Jones needs to be put out to pasture.
