German court fines YouTube 100,000 euros for censorship | Eastern NC Now

Big Tech needs to learn a lesson on censorship

ENCNow

A German citizen whose video footage of a mass anti-lockdown protest in Switzerland this past January was deleted by YouTube as "medical misinformation" took the matter to court, and the result is that YouTube has been fined 100,000 euros by the Court.  The Higher Regional Court at Dresden ruled on April 20 and ordered YouTube to immediately restore the video.  YouTube finally did so after waiting  a month after the court ruling, but the court was not happy with YouTube dragging its feet and fined it 100,000 euros for that delay.  The court specifically rejected YouTube's contention that the video of the anti-lockdown protest had anything to do with "medical misinformation".

What the German court did tracks what legislation now going through the Polish parliament provides, except that that Polish legislation sets up a specialized court to deal with Big Tech censorship.  Polish citizens will be able to challenge Big Tech censorship in that court, which can order Big Tech to restore censored posts, and if Big Tech fails to obey the court order, it can fine the Big Tech company up to a million euros per occurrence.

As the article in the major German daily newspaper Die Welt (The World) explains it is a high fine by the standards of German courts, but hopefully if YouTube persists in censorship, they will raise the ante. I much prefer the million euro fines in the Polish legislation for Big Tech censorship. Even better would be to catch their execs on German or Polish soil and jail them for contempt of court when they defy the court and politically censor thier users.
