    Beaufort County Board of Health Announces retirement of Health Director. Jim Madson is retiring January 1 after a noteworthy career which spanned 38 years in public health, 24 years in the Army as a Preventive Medicine Officer and 14 in NC. He has been the Health Director in Beaufort County since 2013.

    Below is a statement from our Board of Health Chair and attached is the letter of announcement.

    "On behalf of the Beaufort County Board of Health, I'd like to give heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Jim Madson for his many years of service to our county. He has worked tirelessly over this past decade, navigating the county in unyielding fashion through a most challenging health crisis in Covid, being a founding member of BC360, bringing behavioral health services to the county, and starting a community health and outreach program to name a few. His team at the Health Department has been fully supportive and integral to this success. We can't thank Mr. Madson enough, and we wish him well on his next journey, knowing he will be sorely missed in Beaufort County."

The city council has only made two official acts as of February 16, 2026
While this afternoon’s update once again included increased probabilities of moderate to major impacts, it will likely be tomorrow before we receive specific accumulation details.
Government and its bureaucracy are not perfect, and never has been in this self-governed society, here at the local level, at our state level, and at our federal level, therefore, it is incumbent upon all elected politicians to seek a comfortable level of representation for our constituents.
Beaufort County is implementing a new emergency alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts via phone and email.

Has the local government acted responsibly and transparently?
Beaufort County Commissioners meet, and work by a majority vote to do the business of those constituents they purport to represent.
Waste, fraud, abuse and incompetence continue to govern county school budgets and decision making.

However, if one believes that Beaufort County government is in full command of the issues of our times, here locally, one might need to steel their resolve for a more perfect understanding of the intellect possessed by the Center-Left /Left Coalition.
To borrow a big phrase from this salient plan originating at the federal level, under President Trump's watchful eye, whose time has finally arrived, even here in the mispent realm of Beaufort County government(s).
We must vet, and elect those who will actually represent the people or we will be stuck with the same mess we have now.
