Mrs. Ruby Evelyn Abernathy Matkins, age 89, a former resident of 1806 John Small Avenue, Washington, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

   Mrs. Ruby Evelyn Abernathy Matkins, age 89, a former resident of 1806 John Small Avenue, Washington, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

   Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 13, 2013 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, conducted by Rev. Ray Potter. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.

   Mrs. Matkins was born in Raleigh, N.C. on February 20, 1923. She was the daughter of the late John T. Abernathy and Sidney Modlin Abernathy. During World War II, Mrs. Matkins worked at U.S. Naval Base in Norfolk in Supplies. After the war, she worked for the Telephone Company in Norfolk. After she was married, Mrs. Matkins moved to Washington. She kept children in her home for a while. Mrs. Matkins was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness church and loved to read especially her Bible.

   Mrs. Matkins was married to Garland Matthew Matkins, who preceded her in death, June 30, 2006.

   She is survived by her son, John Matthew Matkins and wife, Jeanene of Washington; her daughter, Beverly Matkins Weirick and husband, Scott of Cary; and two grandsons, Matthew and John “Jack” Weirick of Cary.

   In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Matkins was preceded in death by two sisters, Roxie Staton and Dolly Mitchell and two granddaughters, Laurel Nicole Matkins and Ashley Shay Matkins.

   The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM to 2:45 PM Sunday, January 13, 2013 prior to the service at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home of her son, John M. Matkins, 103 Cherry Road, Washington.

    Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Carolina Chapter, in memory of Ruby A. Matkins, 2301 Stonehenge Drive, Suite 200, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.
