Harry Meredith announces run for Sheriff in 2014 | Eastern NC Now

Harry W. Meredith, Jr., retired Chief Deputy of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, today announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Beaufort County. Meredith hopes to be elected to replace retiring Sheriff R. Alan Jordan, with whom he served for 13 years.

    Harry W. Meredith, Jr., retired Chief Deputy of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, today announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Beaufort County. Meredith hopes to be elected to replace retiring Sheriff R. Alan Jordan, with whom he served for 13 years.

    Meredith's distinguished career in law enforcement began with the City of Washington. He then moved to Durham and served as a Patrolman and later as a Detective in the Homicide and Violent Crimes Division. He returned to Washington in 1998 as Chief of Investigations with the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Jordan appointed him Chief Deputy in 2004 where he served until his retirement.

    Meredith received a number of awards and citations for public service during his 27 year career including the Medal of Valor for gallantry in the performance of duty and the Certificate of Merit for duty performed in an unprecedented and clearly outstanding manner.

    Meredith attended Washington High School and graduated from East Carolina University in 1977. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

    Meredith, a Republican, retired from the Sheriff's Office in 2011 to pursue personal interests. When asked why he is seeking the office of Sheriff, Meredith replied, "I feel my education, training and experience make me the most qualified individual to lead this Office. Additionally, I want to continue to improve the high level of service and professionalism achieved under Sheriff Jordan."
