News release:

PINETOWN     Northeast Elementary eighth grade students recently had the opportunity to learn about Air Force JROTC academic courses being offered at Northside High School. Cadets from NHS provided an overview of what incoming freshmen could expect in Academic Year 2013/2014 if they registered for courses within the JROTC program.

Squadron Commander Aldo Plasencia introduced his fellow cadet staff which consisted of Cadet Hayley Jones, Dale Russ, Rene Russell, Brad Smith, Matt Smith, Jenna Smith, Amy Soto, and Dustin Taylor.

Presentation included the Posting of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Drill Team Commander Hayley Jones. Students were provided the opportunity to view two videos by the Air Force “Developing Citizens of Character” and the “Fayetteville State Cadet Officer Leadership School.” These films generated questions of interest into the possibilities of extracurricular activities outside the classroom. Northeast students were informed of chances to visit Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and participate on orientation flights with the 916th Air Refueling Wing and visit the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Station and fly on the C-130 Search and Rescue aircraft.

Highlight of the visit included all Northeast students participating in the drill demonstration of Knockout. Students were shown and explained certain drill movements and then expected to perform these movement upon command by Master Sergeant Charlie Woolard (NHS Aerospace Science Instructor). The last three male or female standing were awarded with official Air Force Physical Training Shirts.
