NC House Speaker Requests Formal Ethics Opinion: | Eastern NC Now

Speaker Moore No Longer Recused From Gaming Legislation

ENCNow
Press Release:

Raleigh, NC     The NC Legislative Ethics Committee has issued a public opinion in response to a request from NC House Speaker Tim Moore.

The committee determined that past work on behalf of a former gaming client is not considered a conflict of interest now that "... legal representation for that gaming client has concluded, there is a formal written agreement terminating the attorney-client relationship, and all fees have been settled between the lawyer-legislator and the former gaming client."

As such, Speaker Moore's recusal on votes or other legislative action is no longer required, and he intends to participate on gaming legislation in the future, just as he does with any other legislation.

NC House Speaker Tim Moore said, "Although there was no requirement to do so, I requested a formal ethics opinion from the Legislative Ethics Committee on this matter. In an effort to provide full transparency, I asked that their opinion be made public."
