Governor's Medallion Award Recipients Honored | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory presented the state's highest award for volunteer service to 21 recipients during the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Awards Program today. Volunteers were recognized for their dedication and service in helping others.

    "Our state prides itself on a spirit of service and stewardship," said Governor McCrory. "We should celebrate these exceptional volunteers for making a difference in their community by giving their personal time, talent and energy to make a lasting impact."

The 2013 award recipients are:



    Edmund "Ed" Adams (Alleghany County) Ed has volunteered with Lions Clubs International for 40 years, serving as an active board member and past president.

    Shirley Ann Baldwin (Moore County) Shirley volunteers as a Parish Nurse at Pinehurst United Methodist Church, supporting the needs of church members.

    Wilma Robinson Boldt (Lenoir County) Wilma has volunteered for 32 years at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in various jobs and has more volunteer hours than any volunteer in its history.

    Susan Bryant (Granville County) Susan volunteers more than 40 hours weekly at Area Congregations in Ministry, an organization that feeds the hungry and helps the poor find shelter.

    Dorothy "Dottie" Buker (Yancey County) posthumously - Dottie volunteered for more than 25 years, giving hundreds of hours in service to many organizations, committees and projects.

    Chapel Hill 2020 Co-Chairs (Orange County) George Cianciolo and Rosemary Waldorf volunteered 20 hours weekly to lead a community vision process and create a new comprehensive plan for Chapel Hill.

    Erica L. Davidson (Davidson County) Erica, a Walmart employee, has volunteered with Special Olympics Davidson County for five years. She recruited 125 fellow employees to volunteer as well.

    Eaton Golf Pride (Scotland County) For 26 years, Eaton Golf Pride and its employees helped support Hospice of Scotland County by raising more than $3 million in a charity golf tournament and silent auction.

    Sue Glovier (McDowell County) Sue has volunteered with McDowell County Cooperative Extension Service at Old Fort for 60 years.

    Ann Groves (Dare County) Ann volunteers at Dare County Center, where she helps in the kitchen, delivers meals to homebound clients, and coordinates both a Diabetes Support Group and Caregivers Respite Care Group.

    High Riders 4-H Club (Johnston County) Pre-teen/teen/adult volunteers in this club have served with Special Olympics North Carolina for 18 years. They are equestrian coaches and loan their horses, show clothes and tack to the athletes.

    F.D. Hornaday, III (Alamance County) F.D. has served on The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Advisory Council for 36 years. He also volunteers with other nonprofits.

    Nicoletta Ann Ingianni (Craven County) A retired school teacher, Nikki has purchased and stocked two bookmobiles and opened the Little Red Bookmobile Afterschool Science Center, where she and other volunteers serve as tutors.

    Fran and Warren Knapp (Randolph County) The Knapp family volunteers for the Randolph-Asheboro YMCA, where they have saved the Y over $250,000 in consultant fees and helped raise $2.6 million to support programs and activities.

    Debbie Koss McCarthy (Orange County) The Executive Director of the Augustine Literacy Project for 13 years, Debbie recruits and trains a network of volunteer tutors to improve the abilities of low-income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills.

    Trudy Nelson (Beaufort County) Trudy, age 92, has volunteered at Vident Beaufort Hospital for 18 years, where she has donated nearly 10,000 hours of service to support patients and their families, visitors and staff.

    Queens University of Charlotte (Mecklenburg County) Students from Queens have volunteered every school day for two years as mentors, lunch buddies, tutors and media center assistants at Sedgefield Elementary School.

    Mark Royster, Jr. (Durham County) Mark is a volunteer with Partners for Youth and serves as a board member and mentor to students who are working to overcome obstacles to graduating from high school or enrolling in college.

    Donna Street (Burke County) Donna volunteers more than 50 hours weekly at A Better Life Animal Rescue, where she manages the foster care and adoption programs for abandoned, abused and homeless animals.

    Team Kathy & Fiona (Forsyth County) Kathy Bergren and Fiona McCormack volunteer at The Children's Home. After remodeling the Clothing Center, their employer, HanesBrands, continues to donate new clothing to the Center.

    Teen Christmas Committee (Catawba County) Committee members donate more than 1,000 hours in six months each year to ensure teenagers are not forgotten at Christmas by soliciting monetary and in-kind donations from civic organizations, churches and local retailers.

    Governor McCrory recognizes and values the commitment of community leadership. He founded the Mayor's Mentoring Alliance in 1995 and personally served as a mentor to youth in the city. In 2005, Charlotte was named among the "100 Best Communities for Youth" by America's Promise. Governor McCrory has been involved in many charitable boards, and served as the honorary chair for the Charlotte chapter of the Alzheimer's Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation.
