College for Kids, summer program for young people, is back at Beaufort County Community College | Eastern North Carolina Now

nbsp;   The worlds of digital photography, sailing, hunting and Italian cooking are among the activities young people can explore during College for Kids 2013 at Beaufort County Community College.

    Back this summer after a three-year hiatus, the popular College for Kids offers 19 classes to students in the fourth through eighth grades. It is offered by the Division of Continuing Education

    Classes will be offered in one-week blocks beginning June 17 and ending Aug. 8. The registration deadline is June 10. All classes are offered on the BCCC campus unless otherwise noted.

    The class schedule is as follows:

    •   Babysitting Basics is for students in the sixth through eighth grades. The course will cover tools to develop good babysitting guidelines and skills. The class will meet 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, June 17 to 20, in Room 1127 of Building 11. Registration is $50.

    •   Everyday Italian Cooking is for students in fifth through eighth grades. Students will learn to follow a recipe and prepare a variety of inexpensive, Italian dishes. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Wednesday, June 17 to 19, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $40. A supply fee is $15.

    •   Sewing for Fun for students in the fourth through seventh grades. The course will cover basic sewing techniques such as measuring, cutting, stitching by hand, and machine. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, June 17 to 20 in Room 824 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

    •   Picture It for students in the fifth through eighth grades. The course will give participants basic photography tips along with basic scrapbooking ideas. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday June 17 to 20 in Room 1125 of Building 11. The registration fee is $40.

    •   Food for Thought will give students the tools they need to make healthy choices in the foods they eat. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 17 to 20, in Room 1125 of Building 11. The registration fee is $40.

    •   In this Boating Safety Course, students ages 13 years old and older will learn to skipper a boat with confidence. The course will be presented by the U.S. Power Squadron 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, June 24 to 27, in Room 31 of Building 10. This course will be offered free of charge for students however, there is a book fee of $45.00.

    •   Back Yard Grilling will give students the basic fundamentals of outdoor grilling. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday and Tuesday, July 8 and 9, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $30. A supply fee is $15.

    •   Painting on Canvas will give students in the third grade and higher an understanding of color through layering effects, glazing and collage. The class will be offered 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays beginning July 11 and ending Aug. 15 in Room 1124 of Building 11. The instructor is Nancy Scoble. The registration fee is $50. A materials fee is $10.

    •   Explore a Career in Public Safety will expose students in the sixth grade and higher to the different careers that are included in public safety. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Wednesday, July 8 to 10 in Room 31 of Building 10. Members of Washington Fire and Rescue will present this activity. This course is offered at no charge.

    •   Drawing the Manga Universe I will give students in the third grade and higher introduction to drawing following the interests of our youth today! The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11 in Room 1124 of Building 11 The registration fee is $50. A materials fee is $5.

    •   Drawing the Manga Universe II will enhance drawing skills using various drawing tools for students in the third grade and higher. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 22 to 25, in Room 1124 of Building 11. The registration fee is $50. A materials fee is $5.

    •   Beginning Sailing will give students ages 10 to 18 the basic elements of sailing. The class will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 22 to 26, on the Washington waterfront. A swim test will be administered the first day of class. The registration fee is $200.

    •   Jump into the Creative Juice I will explore the art forms of marbleizing, quilling and printing. The class, for students in the third grade and higher, will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 29 through Aug. 1 in Room 1124 of Building 11. The registration fee is $50. A materials fee is $10.

    •   Jump into the Creative Juice II will explore strength of paper and three-dimensional structures. The class, for students in the third grade and higher, will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4 through 8 in Room 1124 of Building 11. The registration fee is $50. A materials fee is $10.

    •   How to Make a Great Video Game will teach students to make a video game. The class, for students ages nine and above, will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11 in Room 822 of Building 8 The registration fee is $50.

    •   Heartsaver First Aid, CPR and AED will cover information and skills needed to obtain certification through the American Heart Association. For students grades seven and above, the class will meet 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11, in the Multipurpose Room of Building 10. The registration fee is $40.

    •   Let's Get Moving will let participants in the third through eighth grade have fun with the latest line dances. The class will meet 9 .m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11 in the Multipurpose Room of Building 10 The registration fee is $40.

    •   Teambuilding will teach students in the fifth through eighth grades good communication and problem-solving skills. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11 in the Multipurpose Room of Building 10 The registration fee is $40.

    •   Hunter Safety Course will give students 10 years old and older the hunter safety course offered by the Hunter Education Program of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, July 22 to 24 in Room 31 of Building 10 The course is provided free of charge.

    •   Because class size is limited, admission to College for Kids 2013 is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Class assignments are based on the grade a student will enter in the fall. Supply lists are available once classes have met their minimum enrollment.
