anti-immigration conservative nationalist beats Social Democrat incumbent 2 to 1
Dr. Gordana Siljanokska-Davkova of the anti-immigration conservative nationalist VMRO-DPNME party scored a stunning two-to-one victory over North Macedonia's incumbent Social Democrat president in the first round of their presidential election. Macedonia is the latest European country to see a major swing to the right in its national elections.
A lawyer and university professor, Siljanokska-Darkova will become Macedonia's first female president if, as expected, she beats the Social Democrat incumbent in the runoff. She received 41.2% of the vote to the incumbent's 19.9%. Voters for a center-right ethnic Albanian party and a center-right independent are expected to move to Siljanokska-Davkova, while supporters of a center-left ethnic Albanian party move to the Social Democrat.
Meanwhile former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has published a new book, "Ten Years to Save the West" in which she warns that leftwing authoritarianism is a dangerous and immediate theat to western civlization.
