    Reverend Dr. Phillip Lynn Hayes, age 83, a resident of Belhaven, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday June 2, 2024, while at his home here on earth.

    A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Second Baptist Church in Washington officiated by Dr. Richard Sheriff. A burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson at 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Earl Braddy, James Lewis, D.W. Lane, Robbie Rose, Arnold Moore, and Ken Jones. Honorary pallbearer will be Billy Braddy.

    A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday prior to the service.

    Dr. Hayes was born in Wilson County on November 30, 1940, son of the late Mathew "Pete" Hayes and the late Jenny Hagen Hayes. Following high school, he continued his ministerial education at Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary in Florida. Between high school and seminary school he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. For nine years he served as the pastor at Second Baptist Church of Washington. On July 14, 1979, he married the love of his life, the former Della Dees Yelverton, who survives. Especially following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling along with his wife. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Washington.

    Surviving along with his wife, Della, of the home is a sister: Gwendolyn Hayes Ferrell of Wilson; niece: Jensue Ferrell (Ford Sine III) of Manassas, VA; her son: Jameson Willoughby (Lauren); their daughters: Jayla, Bella, and Zavia; niece: DeLaine Ferrell (Brent Futch) of Wrightsville Beach, NC; their children: Gregory and Bailey; niece: Christy Coggins Jethro (Doug) of Virginia Beach, VA; nephew: Charles S. "Chuck" Coggins Jr. (Dee Dee) Raleigh, NC; and their children: Parker and Cole.

    Flowers are welcome and appreciated and the family kindly asks that any memorial contributions be made to Second Baptist Church, P.O. Box 114, Washington, NC 27889.
