German election: AfD's Alice Weidel now leads after Elon Musk endorsement | Eastern NC Now

Elon Musk's tweet endorsing Germany's populist nationalist anti-immigration Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD) has seen the AfD's chancellor candidate Alice Weidel pull into the lead in polling for the first time.  Friedrich Merz of the tradtional conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is second.  Musk tweeted "only the AfD can save Germany."

The latest poll by the major German pollster INSA, taken for the leading German daily newspaper Bild was conducted after Musk's endorsement and before the Christmas market terror attack in Magdeburg.  While a separate poll is taken regularly by INSA on voting intentions by party, this poll was focused on who people wanted to see as Chancellor.  Since the Musk endorsement, Weidel gained three points to 24% while Merz lost a point to 20%.

The backlash of the German public to the Magdeburg Christmas market attack is likely to also work in the AfD's favor.  When outgoing Social Democrat Chancellor Scholz appeared in public in connection with the attack, he was booed.   There are already demonstrations in Magdeburg and now spreading across Germany with protesters demanding "Deportation Now".  The attacker was a Saudi Arabian citizen and asylum activist who had been given asylum in Germany as a refugee years ago and posted online recently about his intention of "killing Germans indiscriminately".
