    Shirley Ann McCarter Winstead, age 90 a resident of Washington, died Sunday May 4, 2025, at her home.

    No services are planned at this time.

    Shirley was born on February 4, 1935, in Edgecombe County, to the late Joseph Elisha McCarter and Emma Lenier Leggett McCarter. She attended Edgecombe High School. Shirley was a homemaker and worked as an inspector in manufacturing and housekeeping in the hotel industry. She loved taking care of people, collecting dolls and bells, and loved going to the casino. Shirley attended Everetts Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Grady Howell Winstead, brothers, William "Bill" McCarter, Roy McCarter, Justice "Red" McCarter, Jack McCarter, Edward "Buddy" McCarter, and Joseph McCarter, Jr., sisters, Pauline Wester, and Louise McCarter.

    Survivors include, her children, Terrie Wiggins (Allen) of Farm Life, Grady Winstead, Jr. of Beaufort, SC and Emily Taylor of Washington, grandchildren, Ritchie Keel, Joshua Keel (Tracy), Jessica Wood (Woodie), Zach Winstead, Ashlee DeWeese (Jonathan) and Craig Capano, great grandchildren, Shane Keel, Jolea Keel, Vance Keel, Casey Reed, Riley Perciful and Chase DeWeese, great great grandchildren, Camdyn Keel, Bennett Reed and Sagan Clampet.

    The family wants to thank 3HC Hospice for the care they gave Ms. Shirley.
