Vidant Health nurses named to Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina

GREENVILLE The Great 100 Nurses, which promotes nursing excellence in North Carolina, has recognized 13 Vidant Health nurses in its list of the 2013 Great 100 Nurses. This non-profit organization creates peer recognition among North Carolina's registered nurses, as well as awards excellence in practice and commitment to the nursing profession.
The Vidant Health employees on the 2013 Great 100 Nurses list were honored at a gala event on Oct. 12 in Raleigh.
"These nurses represent the finest in the country," said Dr. David C. Herman, president and chief executive officer, Vidant Health. "While technology modernizes the way in which we do our jobs, one thing will never change: the healing touch of those by the side of the patient matters most. The care, comfort and compassion nurses provide cannot be replicated or replaced. We are proud of all our nurses, and extend our congratulations and thanks to those honored by the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina."
The Vidant Health nurses chosen this year are:
Christine Barnes - The program manager for the office of quality at Vidant Medical Center, Barnes earned her bachelor's degree in biology from University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill and her master's degree in nursing leadership in acute care health systems from East Carolina University. She has worked at Vidant Medical Center for five years, serving in a variety of nursing and quality assurance roles. She is a certified Six Sigma Greenbelt and also has basic life support and advanced cardiac life support certifications. She is a member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality and the North Carolina Association of Healthcare Quality.
Lana Brunk - Brunk has worked at Vidant Medical Center for 27 years, starting as a staff nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit. She currently works as the quality liaison for women's services and the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center. Brunk is serving her third term as president of the North Carolina Association of Healthcare Quality. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing and a Master of Arts in Education from East Carolina University.
Leanne Perkins Coore - Coore earned her bachelor's degree and is currently working on her master's degree in nursing from East Carolina University. She currently serves as the staff development assistant for the cardiac intermediate unit. She also spent time as a charge nurse. Coore serves as a basic life support and advanced cardiac life support instructor. She is a Progressive Care Certified Nurse and a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Jessica Griffin - Griffin has worked as a staff nurse at Vidant Medical Center since 2001 after graduating from East Carolina University with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She currently works as a staff nurse IV in the special care nursery in the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital. She has been an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Beta Nu Chapter since her induction in 2000. She achieved a specialty certification from the National Certification Corporation as a Low Risk Neonatal Nurse. Griffin was recently accepted into the ECU Graduate School Program to pursue her master's in nursing.
Rosetta Jessup - Jessup has worked at Vidant Duplin Hospital for 39 years where she currently works as a charge nurse in labor and delivery, newborn nursery and women's services. She also works as a mentor and preceptor for newly hired nurses. Jessup received her nursing degree from James Sprunt Community College. She is a member of the NAACP and serves as chairperson for the Mother-of-the-Year Program, a college scholarship program. She is certified in inpatient obstetrics.
Mimi Lau - Lau currently serves as staff nurse IV at the patient testing center at Vidant Medical Center. She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Boston College. Lau has been a nurse at Vidant Medical Center for 30 years where she has spent time working with both inpatient and outpatient surgery patients. Lau is an instructor for basic life support classes. She is a member of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing and is also board certified.
Barbara Malpass - As a staff nurse IV, Malpass serves as charge nurse, clinical coach, quality representative, Go for the Gold facilitator, and unit educator at Vidant Medical Center. Malpass joined Vidant Medical Center 21 years ago as a nurse extern. She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing at East Carolina University. She is certified in inpatient obstetrics and a member of the North Carolina Perinatal Association.
Danielle McMullen - McMullen currently works as an educational nurse specialist for emergency services. She has worked for Vidant Medical Center for 17 years. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from East Carolina University and is currently enrolled in the master's program. She is a Certified Emergency Nurse and a member of Emergency Nurses Association.
Kelli Jo Ouellette - Ouellette has served as staff nurse IV in the cardiovascular intensive care unit at the East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant Medical Center for five years. She also works as a charge nurse and a preceptor for new hires. She has been employed with Vidant Medical Center for six years. Ouellette received her bachelor degree in nursing from Morningside College in Iowa and her master's in nursing from Mount Mary College in South Dakota.
Kimberly Pittman - Pittman currently serves as a clinical nurse specialist in emergency services at Vidant Medical Center. Prior to joining the organization in 2011, she worked as a staff nurse in emergency departments at WakeMed and Wilson Medical Center. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and her master's in nursing from East Carolina University. She is a certified emergency nurse.
Susan Redding - Redding currently coordinates the palliative care consultation services at Vidant Medical Center. She's been with the hospital for 17 years where she started as a contracted hospital employee hired to help develop an adult day health program in Greenville. She received her bachelor's degree from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, MD. She went on to achieve her master's in nursing from East Carolina University. Redding is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Chandra Speight-Rahilly - Speight-Rahilly has worked at Vidant Medical Center for three years where she currently serves as a quality nurse specialist for the department of patient safety. She earned master's degrees in English and political science before completing phase one of ECU's alternate entry Master of Science in Nursing Program. She is currently enrolled in ECU's Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Speight-Rahilly serves a senior editor of Evolving Perspectives Patient Care Journal. She was awarded a Mary Lewis Wyche Fellowship by the North Carolina Foundation for Nursing (2013), the Robin and Ray Corbett Scholarship (2013), and the Roccapriore-Tschetter Fellowship (2012). She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Golden Key National Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Phi. Speight-Rahilly is a certified medical surgical nurse and certified in advanced cardiac life support.
Neil Williams II - Williams is a patient care coordinator at Vidant Medical Center. He also works with the emergency response team and as a clinical adjunct instructor at Pitt Community College. He received his associate's degree in nursing from Pitt Community College and his master's in nursing from Walden University in Minneapolis. Williams is currently enrolled in the doctorate program at Gardner- Webb University. He is a member of the American Nurses Association, NC Nurses Association and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
