new prime minister Takaichi wins in early election gamble

ENCNow

Japan's new Prime Minister Takaichi, the country's first female leader and its most conservative since World War II, took over in the middle of a term when her predecessor resigned, and gambled on calling an early election for parliament.  The voters rewarded her with a landslide election for her party and coalition.

Takaichi's  Liberal Democratic Party (LDP),  the country's traditional conservatives despite its name were allied with the populist nationalist right Japan Innovation Party with a majority in the lower house, but lacked a majority in the upper house going into the election.  The election gave them a supermajority in the lower house, which will allow them to override any legislation blocked by the upper house.

The election saw the LDP win 316 of parliament's 485 seats, a gain of 125 seats, while the main opposition Centrist Reform Party won only 49, a loss of 123 seats.  The Japan Innovation Party was third with 34 seats.  The center-left Democrat People's Party was fourth with 28 seats.  The ultra conservative Saracito Party was fifth with 15 seats, a gain of 12, and a new technocratic party, Team Mirai won 11 seats.
