    Juanita Gurganus Smith, age 76, a resident of Carrow Rd., Chocowinity, NC passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at River Trace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

    There will be a celebration of her life Wednesday, November 13 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service officiated by D. J. Maxey and John Anderson. Burial will follow in Wesley Cemetery. Scott Smith, A.J. Smith, Earl Gurganus, Jeff Tushar, Buddy Smith and Brandon Hardison will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

    Juanita was born July 13, 1937 in Beaufort County daughter of the late Otway and Minnie Silverthorne Gurganus. She lived her entire life in Beaufort County and married Gene Autry Smith who preceded her in death. Juanita was a homemaker/farmer's wife. She attended Eastern Pines Christian Church and enjoyed traveling to the mountains.

    She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Jo Teall of Georgia and Darlene S. Cox and husband William of Chocowinity; her son, Al Smith and wife Tamara of Greenville; her granddaughter, Christina Hardison and husband Brandon of Jamesville; her grandson, AJ Smith; her two sisters, Margaret Tushar of Garrettsville, OH and Thelma Lee Gurganus of Washington; and her brother, Floyd Gurganus of Bath.

    In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Michelle Lea Cox; one sister, Hallie Pheiffer; and two brothers, Buddy and William Gurganus.

    In lieu of flowers the family requests for memorials to be made in Juanita's memory to Eastern Pines Church of Christ, 3380 Portertown Rd. Greenville, NC 27858.
