Second NC Democrat legislator switches registration to Unaffiliated | Eastern NC Now

follows seven term Rep. Carla Cunningham out of party

ENCNow

The Democrat caucus in the NC House of Representatives has lost its second member in as many days.  Representative Nasif Majeed has followed fellow former Mecklenburg County Democrat legislator Carla Cunningham in switching his party registration from Democrat to Unaffiliated.

Cunningham had split with her party over illegal immigration.  With Najeed, it was over gender issues and crime.  In the last legislative session, Najeed had voted to override Governor Stein's veto of legislation that stopped taxpayer funding of gender transitions, defined gender as only male or female, and increased parental control in schools.  He was also one of the Democrats who defied his caucus to vote for Iryna's Law which cracked down on crime.  "I had some moral issues about that and had to lean on my values," Majeed explained.
