Columbia has now joined the parade of Latin American countries that have ditched socialist paties and elected strong conservatives. The handpicked candidate of outgoing socialist president Petro has been defeated and replaced by a conservative endorsed by President Trump. Abelardo De la Espriella defeated Petro's candidate by almost half a million votes.

The new president has campaigned on a strong crackdown on crime and criminal cartels, using the methods of El Salvador President Bukele as a role model. He also pledged to work with President Trump.

De law Espiriella rose to the occaision after the first conservative frontrunner for president was assassinated by the cartels earlier this year.
