Harry James Phelps | Eastern NC Now

    Harry James Phelps, age 77, a resident of Chocowinity, NC passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026, at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

    A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday July 22, 2026, at the Moore Family Cemetery on Highway 33 East in Chocowinity, NC. David Linton will be the officiant. The family will receive friends following the service at the gravesite.

    Mr. Phelps was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Whit Gurley Phelps and late Juanita Peed Phelps. He was a 1967 graduate of Chocowinity High School and a 2006 Graduate of Beaufort County Community College. On May 31, 1968, he married the love of his life, Brenda Jo Ange. Mr. Phelps served honorably in the Vietnam War as a member of our United States Army. He retired from the military service as a Sergeant First Class in 1988. He then went on to work for TRW until his retirement in 2004. Mr. Phelps enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on cars, motorcycles, and spending time with his family.

    Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Brenda Jo Phelps. Together they have two daughters, Kimberly and Michelle. Kimberly Phelps, along with her husband, Chad Johnson reside in Ayden, NC. Michelle Phillips and husband Jeremy Phillips are residents of Wilmington, NC. Harry and Brenda also have three grandchildren, Shelby Patterson, Owen Phillips, Cooper Phillips.

    He has one brother, Scott Baytala, a resident of Washington, NC. And, he was in preceded death by his sister, Linda Buck.
