The Beaufort County Commissioner Jail Committee met Wednesday (12-11-13) to accept proposals from architects and construction companies to do the design work on a new Law Enforcement Complex in the Chocowinity Industrial Park as well as manage the construction once/if construction starts.

Click here to review the list of proposals.

Most of the twenty-minute meeting was consumed by staff reports on the selection procedures, mostly mandated by law, for the architectural and construction management functions of building a new jail complex.

You can hear these explanations and the brief discussion by the committee. The only real decision made was to not accept the late proposals from ADW Architects and Strollo Architects. You can hear their rationale for rejecting the proposals in the clip.

Editor's note: We had not planned to video this meeting but rather to get the "official" file since the County Commission voted recently to "film Jail Committee meetings" when Al Klemm voted with the Republicans to do so. But when we learned that Jerry Langley had overruled that vote we decided to record it. We would normally edit such clips but are posting the full version here, un-edited, in the public interest.

It is becoming increasing clear that Langley is determined to keep the public in the dark about how the decisions regarding this issue are being made.

To the extent that is true, it puts Al Klemm in a bind. He must now decide whether to continue to march to Langley's tune or choose to insure that the public has access to what is going on.

This gig's going to get interesting before it's done. Check back.

(The sound quality is not real good because they did not use the sound amplification system. Go figure.)

For the record, there was no provision for public comments.
